I have to put a soundport into an upcoming build and am looking for any pointers. Can anyone direct me to a toot on the procedure. I checked the archives here and did see the routing method of Chris.

I have seen some sexy ones with contrasting layered backer that shows up nice if you bevel the edge.

Couple of questions that come to mind. What would the minimum thickness of the backer be? I guess there really wouldn't be a maximum, within reason, if going for a look with layers showing on the bevel.

What is the grain orientation of the backer?

I'm guessing one would make up a gluing caul for the inside and just clamp it in the mold?

If anyone would like to post a photo of theirs please do!

One veneer at cross grain, 2nd veneer grain same as side. If you're super lucky you can use matching off cuts. Put them in after the sides are bent and the linings are in. Using veneers means you don't have to heat bent the backups.

I find that sound ports make such a subtle difference even at he best of times to not be worth the fuss.

This one's bound but are is 2 layers inside, contrasting cross-grain against the side, and matching same direction inside. both about 1 mm IIRC
Bend them on a hot pipe and clamped with a flexible caul to glue when sides were in the mold.
And I quite like them.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well, its an attempt to make one, but not originally planned.
I was attempting to tune body resonances "a la" Gore and it was a little too big originally
Took soundhole binding first, then soundport binding was second attempt, but it took the disc in the middle to finally nail it.
